The Apideck Field Guide to the Sage Portfolio (A Global Glossary)

The Apideck Field Guide to the Sage Portfolio (A Global Glossary)

In this series, we've explored the "why" behind Sage's complex, fragmented ecosystem. We've shown how 40 years of M&A created a federation of products, and how the "Sage" your customer uses depends on their region, business size, and even the decade they bought their software.

This post is the "what." It's the definitive decoder ring.

We've built this field guide as a reference for product managers, engineers, and partnership leaders. Use it to identify the Sage product you're facing, understand its technology, and assess its integration potential. Where a detail is region-specific or changes often, we flag it so you can confirm against Sage's own docs before you build.

The Global Portfolio

Products that are region-agnostic or being expanded globally.

Sage Intacct

  • What It Is: Sage's flagship cloud-native financial management platform for the mid-market.
  • Target Market: Mid-Market, Upper SMB.
  • Geography: Originally US; now sold across the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, South Africa, France, Germany, and parts of Asia and the Middle East. This is a single codebase localised per market. (Note: the UAE edition of Sage Business Cloud Accounting has been retired, but Intacct is sold there.)
  • Origin: Acquired Intacct Corp. in 2017 for 850 million dollars.
  • Architecture: Cloud-Native (SaaS).
  • API Status: Strong. A mature XML (SOAP-style) Web Services API, plus a REST API that reached general availability in the 2025 Release 1. New objects now land in REST first; a few areas (such as bank feeds) remain XML-only.
  • Access: Requires joining the Sage Intacct Marketplace Partner Program to obtain Web Services developer credentials.
  • Apideck Status: Available on our Unified Accounting API.

Sage Business Cloud Accounting

  • What It Is: A cloud-native accounting platform for small businesses, competing with Xero and QuickBooks Online.
  • Target Market: Small Business, Sole Trader.
  • Geography: The Sage Accounting API covers the UK, Ireland, and Canada. The older US edition's API (v1/v2) is deprecated. Important: the South African product with the same name runs on a separate codebase and API, and is not the same integration.
  • Origin: Formerly known as Sage One.
  • Architecture: Cloud-Native (SaaS).
  • API Status: Good (REST). A modern REST API with OAuth 2.0, free for developers to build against. There is no true sandbox; developers use time-limited trial businesses.
  • Apideck Status: Available on our Unified Accounting API.

Sage HR

  • What It Is: A cloud-native, core HR solution for small to mid-sized businesses.
  • Target Market: SMB.
  • Geography: Global.
  • Origin: Formerly known as CakeHR (acquired 2019, rebranded 2020).
  • Architecture: Cloud-Native (SaaS).
  • API Status: Good (REST). A simple REST API that uses an API key (sent as an X-Auth-Token header) for authentication.
  • Apideck Status: Available on our Unified HRIS & ATS APIs.

Sage People

  • What It Is: A cloud-native Human Capital Management (HCM) solution.
  • Target Market: Mid-Market.
  • Geography: Global.
  • Origin: Fully acquired (Fairsail) in 2017; built on the Salesforce platform.
  • Architecture: Cloud-Native (SaaS), on the Salesforce Platform.
  • API Status: Integration is via the Salesforce REST and SOAP APIs, subject to Salesforce's limits and data model. In practice you are integrating with Salesforce, not a standalone Sage API.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

Sage X3

  • What It Is: A highly customizable ERP for complex business processes, particularly manufacturing and distribution. Sage's most globally available product (around 25 markets).
  • Target Market: Enterprise, Upper Mid-Market.
  • Geography: Global. In some markets it is the only Sage product sold (for example Poland and Brazil, via distributors).
  • Origin: Originally the Adonix ERP; Sage acquired Adonix in 2005. A single global codebase.
  • Architecture: Hybrid (On-premise, Hosted, or Cloud).
  • API Status: Strong on paper (SOAP, REST/SData, and GraphQL), with fully public documentation. The practical gate is getting a live environment to build against, which runs through the Sage reseller/partner channel rather than self-service signup.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

Sage 300

  • What It Is: A mid-market ERP with strong multi-currency and international capabilities.
  • Target Market: Mid-Market SMB.
  • Geography: Global (branded "Sage 300 Solutions" or "Sage 300cloud" depending on region).
  • Origin: Formerly Accpac (acquired 2004).
  • Architecture: On-Premise / Hosted, with a Web API.
  • API Status: The Sage 300 Web API is REST/OData, but it uses Basic Authentication rather than OAuth, and a COM/.NET SDK sits underneath it. SDK and full Web API access are gated to Sage 300 Developer Partner Program members.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

The Pan-European Portfolio

The newer strategic cloud products for mainland Europe.

Sage Active

  • What It Is: Sage's strategic, API-first cloud platform for the European SMB market.
  • Target Market: Small Business.
  • Geography: France, Germany, Spain.
  • Origin: A newer in-house product (launched in France around 2023).
  • Architecture: Cloud-Native (SaaS).
  • API Status: Strong (GraphQL). API-first, with OAuth 2.0 and self-service developer signup. The most approachable Sage API to start building against.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

The North American Portfolio (US & Canada)

Sage 50 US

  • What It Is: The primary legacy desktop accounting solution for US small businesses.
  • Target Market: Small Business.
  • Geography: US.
  • Origin: Acquired Peachtree Software in 1998.
  • Architecture: Desktop (Cloud-Connected).
  • API Status: None (Local SDK only). No official web API. Integration uses the COM-based SDO (Sage Data Objects); the SDK is free but requires an ISV/development-partner application.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

Sage 50 Canada

  • What It Is: The primary legacy desktop accounting solution for Canadian small businesses.
  • Target Market: Small Business.
  • Geography: Canada.
  • Origin: Formerly known as Simply Accounting.
  • Architecture: Desktop (Cloud-Connected).
  • API Status: None (Local SDK only). No official web API. It is a completely separate codebase from the US and UK versions, though it shares the US SDK/partner portal.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

Sage 100 (US)

  • What It Is: A legacy on-premise ERP for US mid-market SMBs, strong in distribution and manufacturing.
  • Target Market: Mid-Market SMB.
  • Geography: US.
  • Origin: Acquired State of the Art (known as MAS 90/200) in 1998.
  • Architecture: On-Premise / Hosted.
  • API Status: None (Local SDK only). No native web API. Integration uses the COM-based BOI (Business Object Interface) or ODBC, gated by Sage's Technical Partner Program.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

Criterion

  • What It Is: A cloud-native Human Capital Management (HCM) and payroll platform, being rebranded to Sage HCM.
  • Target Market: Mid-Market.
  • Geography: North America.
  • Origin: Acquired Criterion in October 2025.
  • Architecture: Cloud-Native (SaaS).
  • API Status: Good (REST). A modern REST API.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

The UK & Ireland Portfolio

Sage 50 UK & Ireland

  • What It Is: The dominant legacy desktop accounting solution for UK small businesses.
  • Target Market: Small Business.
  • Geography: UK & Ireland.
  • Origin: Descended from Sage's original Sage Line 50.
  • Architecture: Desktop (Cloud-Connected).
  • API Status: None (Local SDK only). No official web API. Integration uses the COM-based SDO (Sage Data Objects), which requires paid UK Developer Programme membership.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

Sage 200 (UK)

  • What It Is: The primary mid-market product in the UK, the step-up from Sage 50.
  • Target Market: Mid-Market SMB.
  • Geography: UK & Ireland.
  • Origin: In-house lineage (evolved from Sage Line 100 / MMS).
  • Architecture: Hybrid (On-premise, Hosted, or Cloud).
  • API Status: Good (REST/OData with OAuth 2.0 via Sage ID). Notably, building against the Sage 200 API does not require Developer Programme membership; credentials come through a request form. The lowest-friction Sage mid-market API after Intacct.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

The European "Local Champions" (France, Germany, Spain)

Sage 50 France (Ciel) and Sage 100 France (Saari)

  • What It Is: The legacy accounting and management solutions for the French market. These are two separate products with two separate origins, despite the shared "Sage" branding.
  • Target Market: Small Business (Sage 50) / SME (Sage 100).
  • Geography: France (Sage 100 also sold in Belgium/Luxembourg and Morocco).
  • Origin: Sage 50 France descends from Ciel (acquired 1992). Sage 100 France descends from Saari (acquired 1994), a different company; it is not a Ciel product.
  • Architecture: Desktop / On-Premise.
  • API Status: No public web API. Sage 100 France integrates through a local-only, proprietary C# library ("objets métiers"), plus a separate OData API scoped to Microsoft 365 / Power Platform connectivity. Neither is a general-purpose cloud API.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

Sage 50 & 100 Germany

  • What It Is: The distinct accounting and ERP solutions for the German market. Different codebases again from the French and US products of the same number.

  • Architecture: Desktop / On-Premise.
  • API Status:
    • Sage 50: None (Local SDK only).
    • Sage 100: An OData API (via AppDesigner) exists, but access is tied to a specific "Connected" licence tier. This is the exception among the Sage 100 family, though it is OData rather than a general REST API.
  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

Sage 50 Spain (Contaplus)

  • What It Is: The legacy desktop accounting solution for the Spanish market.
  • Target Market: Small Business.
  • Geography: Spain.

  • Apideck Status: Contact us for integration details.

You Don't Need to Memorize This Map

This ecosystem is a lot. The fragmentation is real, and it's global. The challenge for a SaaS company isn't building one "Sage integration"; it's the hidden portfolio of connectors you'd need to build and maintain to serve this market.

This is the problem Apideck's Unified APIs were built to solve. We do the work of navigating this map, building to the REST, XML, and GraphQL APIs, and handling the logic of each platform.

You build one integration to our Unified Accounting API to reach Sage Intacct and Sage Business Cloud Accounting, or one to our Unified HRIS API to reach Sage HR. We handle the fragmentation so you can focus on your product.
